Audio Post-Production FAQs

What is audio post-production?

In the context of film, television, and video production, Audio Post-Production relates to all stages of sound that is created, manipulated and synchronized with moving pictures. It includes, but is often distinguished from “production audio,” which is the audio recorded during filming. Audio Post-Production involves dialogue editing, ADR (automatic dialogue replacement), Voice Over recording, sound design, Foley, sound effects creation, music editing, mixing, and mastering.

In the realm of voice-based media such as podcasts and audio books, Audio Post-Production is focused on producing consistent sound. Voice recording, editing, and mastering techniques have been adjusted to meet the standards of the technology and noise reduction and volume normalization tools are more prevalent.

What types of projects do you handle?

LHV Audio Services provides audio post-production for films, television shows, commercials, podcasts, audiobooks, documentaries, corporate videos, web content, and music projects. Whether it’s a short spot or a long-form production, we tailor our approach to fit the creative and technical needs of each unique project.

What services are included in audio post-production?

Audio Post-Production includes dialogue editing, ADR (automatic dialogue replacement), Voice Over recording, sound design, Foley, sound effects creation, music editing, mixing, and mastering. Projects can be handled start to finish, or we can be contracted for just one or a few of these services.

Can you fix poor-quality audio?

To an extent. Our engineers can clean up some noise and adjust levels, but the better the source material, the better the final result. While severely damaged recordings may have limitations, we always provide an honest assessment of what can be improved.

What is the difference between mixing and mastering?

Audio mixing is creating a “hopefully pleasant” mono, stereo or surround sound product that is made up of multiple audio elements. For television, film, audiobooks and social media these elements can include dialogue, music and sound effects. For music production the elements are the vocal and instrumental performances of each song.

Audio mastering is a form of audio post-production where the final mix is processed and prepared for duplication and distribution across a variety of platforms. A single mix may go through multiple masterings in order to meet the distribution standards of the various platforms that exist. At LHV Audio Services, we follow the standards for the platforms that our clients’ are going to use for their distribution.

Especially in music production, mastering will bring a more consistent and cohesive sound to not only a single song but to an entire album. This is crucial if the songs on that album have been produced at different studios with different producers at different times. Mastering engineers will often apply equalization and dynamic range compression in order to optimize sound translation on all playback systems. Music mastering is an art form that requires very critical listening in a highly specialized environment.
