Voiceover (VO) Recording FAQs

What is voiceover?

Voiceover is the process of performing and recording an “off-camera” narrator’s voice for use in film, television, commercials, animations, audiobooks, podcasts, e-learning, and other media projects.

How is voiceover recording different from ADR?

ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) replaces dialogue that’s already been recorded on-set in order to improve the sound quality or performance.  A voiceover (VO), on the other hand, is recorded independently of any on-screen performance. VO can be narration, character voices, e-learning instructions, commercials, or any spoken content intended to be added to a project. While ADR and VO share some technical recording techniques, the purpose and creative approach differ.

Does LHV Audio Services offer remote VO recording sessions?

Yes. We regularly record voiceovers in the studio while the director and production team remote-in via Source Connect, Studio Link, Zoom, and other secure streaming tools. Remote sessions allow talent and clients to collaborate from anywhere while achieving a high quality recording.

Does LHV Audio Services record foreign language VOs?

Yes. We have a history of recording and mixing projects in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin. While we are not a voice talent agency, we have worked with a lot of voice talent over the last 30+ years and can make recommendations upon request.

What types of projects use voiceover?

LHV Audio Services records voiceovers for a wide range of projects, including commercials, films, TV shows, animations, video games, e-learning modules, podcasts, audiobooks, and corporate videos and presentations. Any project that uses spoken word or narration can benefit from professional voice over recording.

How do I prepare for a voice over session?

Whether you are the client or the voiceover talent, the key to having a good session is to come in prepared.

As the client, you should have chosen the voice that best suits your project and reviewed the copy numerous times, including reading it out loud for timing, pace, flow and messaging. Know what you want and be able to convey that clearly to the voice talent that you’ve hired.

As the voice talent, you should come prepared to perform. Your voice is your instrument. Have control over it and be able to perform consistently with it.  Be ready to listen to direction from the client and the engineer and then perform to the best of your abilities.

LHV Audio Services offers a comfortable, creative atmosphere for both the voice talent and clients. The isolation room is larger than most (with an outside view), the couches are very comfy and snacks are always available.  Having a facility that’s not only technically proficient but creatively appealing for our guests, allows us to perform our job – capturing great performances – better as well.
